Slow Fashion - Selai Design

Story of Mari

My name is Mari (name changed). I am a mother.

Every day, I think about my children. I want them to have enough food, to go to school, and to have a better future than I had.

Life has not been easy. There were many days filled with hardship, worry, and fear about how I would support my family. As a woman in Afghanistan, it is very difficult to find work.

One day, I met Asra. She gave me the opportunity to work at Selai Design. That day changed my life. For the first time in a long time, I felt more stable and hopeful.

Now I work at Afghan Women Support's Selai Design Atelier in Karga. Here, I spend my days with women like Negin (name changed, pictured on the right). We sew together, support one another, and share our stories. It feels comforting to be surrounded by likeminded women who understand my life and share the same challenges that I face.

When I sew, I feel calm and the time flies. I use my hands to create something beautiful, and every bag and every piece I make fills me with pride.

The income I earn helps me buy food and support my family. But Selai Design has given me much more than a job. It has given me confidence. It has given me hope. It has given me a safe place where I feel valued, where I belong, and where I can believe in a better future.

When I come to the  Karga atelier, I don't feel alone. I laugh again. I can share my worries with women who understand me. We support each other, learn new things together, and remind each other to stay strong. I believe that I can build a better future for my children.

I hope that one day my daughter will grow up in a world where she can choose her own future.

This is why I keep sewing. Every stitch is for my children and for a better tomorrow.

This is why I keep sewing. Every stitch is for my children and for a better tomorrow.

Our Slow Fashion Initiative

At Afghan Women Support, we believe that clothing and handmade products should tell a story.

Our handicraft initiative is based on the principles of slow fashion: quality over quantity, fair working conditions, traditional craftsmanship, and sustainable production.

Rather than producing large quantities at low cost, we focus on creating meaningful products that support women’s livelihoods and preserve traditional Afghan skills. Every item is made with care by women who are building a more independent future for themselves and their families.

By choosing handmade products, customers are not only purchasing an item — they are supporting education, dignity, economic empowerment, and sustainable opportunities for women in Afghanistan.

We believe that fashion can be beautiful, ethical, and impactful at the same time.

Empowering Through Creativity:
Crafting Dreams, Creating Futures

The Philosophy Behind Our Slow Fashion Initiative

At Selai Design, we believe that fashion should respect both people and the planet.

In a world driven by fast fashion, overconsumption, and mass production, we choose a different path. Our products are handmade by women in Afghanistan using traditional skills, local craftsmanship, and a commitment to quality over quantity.

We believe in creating opportunities rather than dependency. Every product supports women in building skills, earning an income, and strengthening their independence.

Our work is guided by the principles of slow fashion:

• Quality over quantity
• Fair and dignified work
• Traditional craftsmanship
• Sustainable production
• Meaningful products with a story

Because meaningful change takes time, we do not believe in rushing production at the expense of people or quality. Every piece is made with care, patience, and purpose.

By choosing Selai Design, you are supporting more than a product. You are supporting women, education, craftsmanship, and a more sustainable future.

Slow fashion. Lasting impact.

Supporting Cultural Fusion

The products crafted through our initiative are not just fashion items; they are cultural expressions. Each piece tells a story, bridging the gap between Eastern traditions and Western innovation. By supporting our initiative, you are not just purchasing a product; you are investing in the preservation of heritage and the celebration of creativity.

Through our crafting program, we are not just stitching fabrics; we are weaving dreams, creating opportunities, and shaping a future where women stand as artisans of their destiny.

Thank you for your generous support! Every donation helps provide our family with greater stability. With gratitude,

Your AWS Team from Kabul
